SEC.01 / MECHANISM

Core technology and mechanism of action

The molecule is built from an anchoring group plus a solvated chain. It forms a sterically hindered encapsulating layer on pigment and powder surfaces, blocking agglomeration and flocculation at the source.

Primary pigment particleSolvated chainAnchoring group
Steric encapsulation model
Anchoring group — strong adsorption on the powder surface
Solvated chain — extends quickly into the medium
Steric boundary — barrier against re-agglomeration
SYNTHESIS / Powder treatment stage

Surface treatment mechanism

At the instant primary powder particles form, R1800-S adsorbs rapidly and completes encapsulation, filling lattice defects and passivating surface-active sites. Even after filtration, compaction and drying, the particles retain only loose point-to-edge contact and redisperse readily in downstream processing.

Adsorptive film formationLattice defects filledReadily redispersible
DISPERSION / Processing and dispersion stage

Dispersion mechanism in application

Anchoring groups bind firmly to the powder surface while the solvated chains extend quickly into the medium, markedly lowering interfacial tension for fast wetting and providing sustained steric hindrance against re-agglomeration and flocculation.

ONE-AGENT / Combined result

Wetting × dispersion × encapsulation

A single additive serves as wetting agent, dispersant and coating agent at once: less dust in premixing, faster milling, no flocculation in the finished product — no second dispersing component is required at any stage.

02

⚡ Substantially higher production efficiency

Dispersion stays excellent even at high screw speeds — output per unit time rises while dispersion quality does not fall, and can even improve markedly.

↗Screw speed RPM
↗Dispersion quality
High speed · no decay
03

✨ Better appearance and quality

Eliminates speckles, stains and pinholes; surface smoothness, brightness and color vividness are all improved, and impact resistance is raised at the same time.

04

📉 Less scrap · lower cost

Batch-to-batch consistency is excellent, the rework rate falls markedly, and production waste and hidden costs are compressed together.

05

🍃 Cleaner production environment

Premixing reduces the crowding of pigment powder, airborne dust drops noticeably, and the feed area stays cleaner while raw material is saved.

06

🛡️ Chemically inert · safe

Does not react with other additives; used correctly it has no adverse effect on resin MFI, melting point, hardness, light resistance or aging resistance.

07

⚡ Improved insulation performance

In cable compound / kaolin systems, adding only 0.2% (two parts per thousand) markedly improves insulation performance.

08

🔧 Multiple functions in one

Combines dispersion and encapsulation, lubrication and mold release, toughening and brightening; it can also serve as a slip / anti-blocking agent, replace maleic anhydride grafting, and help adjust flow rate.

SEC.05 / CASES

Industry pain points × application solutions

Four recurring problems from the production line, and how R1800-S addresses each.

01
Blow molding filler

Pitting and screen blockage in blow molding filler compounds

✕ ProblemFine powder agglomerates easily; ordinary stearic acid / PE wax provides insufficient encapsulation, and the powder re-agglomerates over time, causing small pits in blow molded parts and blocking the screen pack.
✓ SolutionProcessed above 80 ℃, R1800-S wets, disperses and encapsulates the powder rapidly, then solidifies on cooling into a firm protective layer — eliminating re-agglomeration completely.
02
Cast film coating

Color spots and map-like mottling (patterns) in coated color films

✕ ProblemPoor pigment dispersion in the masterbatch produces agglomerated black spots, or a melt index mismatch causes uneven flow, forming color patches of varying depth.
✓ SolutionAdding R1800-S improves pigment dispersion uniformity and brings the masterbatch and resin to similar viscosity, eliminating color spots and map-like mottling.
03
Blown film

Film blooming and loss of heat-seal performance

✕ ProblemLow-grade PE wax is adulterated with paraffin, which decomposes during processing and migrates to the film surface as bloom, seriously weakening heat-seal strength.
✓ SolutionReplacing or sharply reducing low-molecular-weight PE wax / paraffin with R1800-S blocks the migration of small molecules and preserves heat-seal performance.
04
Fiber spinning

Frequent filament breaks in flat yarn (split-film fiber) production

✕ ProblemOversized or poorly dispersed pigment particles roughen the film surface, producing large amounts of waste filament and breaks during uniaxial drawing.
✓ SolutionR1800-S delivers ultra-fine dispersion, improving compatibility and surface smoothness and markedly reducing the filament break rate.

⚠ Usage restrictions

NOTICE · Read before dosing
✕
Never dose cold

Without heating to the working temperature (below 80 ℃), R1800-S cannot deliver its encapsulating and dispersing effect — always dose under hot process conditions.

✕
Never use in water-based systems

Do not use in water-based coating or water-based ink formulations (the water solubility test used for identification is the exception).

01Product positioning

R1800-S is the base type and the series origin among the three R1800 hyperdispersant types. The documentation records that it is "copolymerized from polyolefin ether multimers under high temperature and high pressure, mainly used in rubber and plastics color masterbatch and oil-based paints and inks, etc."; the synthesis method is production from a coating agent and a dispersant in precise proportions under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, and it is a "polymeric multifunctional wetting and coating-type dispersing aid". The one-sentence positioning in the official product data is "dedicated to color masterbatch, chemical dispersion breaks up agglomeration", with the mechanism field "chemical dispersion". (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

The documentation for the other two types both states "on the basis of R1800-S": the SK type incorporates ester functional groups, improving yellowing resistance and weather resistance in plastic products, and is mainly used in rubber and plastics white masterbatch; the SH type incorporates silicon-based products, improving dispersion performance in carbon black. The three types are divided by color — S corresponds to color and general purpose, SK to white, and SH to black; the mechanism, form and usage rules common to all three types are all written under the S type. (Data source: product handbook)

This product family addresses problems in the field: the finer the powder, the more easily it agglomerates together, and without a good dispersant there is no way to disperse it; after the filler dosage increases, the powder in the melt is difficult to disperse and gel spots are produced. Different masterbatch manufacturers differ in equipment, process, raw materials, lubrication systems and cost ranges, and this is where the multiple models and the dosage table graded by mesh come from. (Data source: product handbook)

The documentation records that the main functions of this product are: "dispersion and encapsulation, lubrication and mold release, toughening and brightening, usable as a slip and anti-blocking agent, able to replace maleic anhydride grafting, able to adjust product flow rate, able to improve product impact strength and tensile strength, etc.". It is additionally recorded at the series level: processing aids with good dispersion and also good lubrication all tend to improve the tensile strength, toughness, surface finish and Vicat softening point of plastic products. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

  • Lower pigment cost — can increase the tinting strength of organic pigments by more than 25%, while also improving the hiding power of inorganic pigments; the documentation records that "even if the pigment dosage is reduced by 10%~20%, the coloring effect will not be weakened".
  • Improve production efficiency — with conventional formulations, the dispersion effect often decreases when the screw speed is increased; using this product can raise output per unit time while the dispersion effect does not decrease, and "sometimes even increases substantially".
  • Improve product quality — the documentation records that it "eliminates spots and stains and shrinkage cavities, improves the surface condition and raises the finish of the articles; eliminates surface defects and improves impact strength; increases brightness and vividness".
  • Lower processing cost — product quality is stable and the "rework" rate is low.
  • Improve processing conditions — in premixing, reduces the "crowding" degree of pigments and powders as well as pigment dust.
  • Inert — "does not react with other additives"; when used correctly it does not change the original properties of the resin (melt index, viscosity, melting point/softening point, stress/strain, hardness/softness, light fastness, impact resistance, aging resistance, etc.).
  • Related to insulation performance — when treating kaolin, "adding 2 per thousand" can improve insulation performance (for comparison with the graded dosage, see the "to be verified" note in Section 4).

02Formulation system & mechanism of action

The molecular structure of this product is divided into two parts: one part is the anchoring group, and the other is the solvating chain. Its main function is to form a protective layer (coating film) of a certain thickness on the surface of pigments and various powders. When pigment and powder particles adsorbed with the hyperdispersant approach each other, due to the steric hindrance of the protective layer (coating film), it is difficult for the particles to form tight agglomerates or flocculates, so that the pigment and powder particles are easily dispersed and have good dispersion stability in the medium. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

The documentation divides the working mode of this product into two types: the mode of action during the surface treatment of pigments and powders, and the mode of action during the dispersion of pigments and powders. (Data source: product handbook)

  1. Surface treatment process — adsorption and film formation, purification of active sitesOnce pigment and powder particles are formed (primary particles), the specially designed R1800-S hyperdispersant rapidly adsorbs onto the particle surfaces to form a protective layer (coating film), filling up the lattice defects of the particles and purifying the active sites on the surface that are prone to agglomeration, thereby effectively preventing further agglomeration of the particles. Even if the particles agglomerate during filtration, compaction and drying, due to the isolating effect of this product, the agglomerated state is very loose (the particles mainly contact each other at points and edges), and the resulting pigments and powders are particularly easy to disperse in subsequent applications.
  2. Dispersion process — reducing interfacial tension, stabilization by steric barrierThe anchoring groups adsorb onto the surface of the pigments and powders, and the solvating chains dissolve rapidly in the dispersion medium and have good compatibility with it, thus greatly reducing the interfacial tension between the pigment and powder particles and the dispersion medium, so that the powder is quickly wetted by the medium during dispersion; at the same time, due to the steric hindrance of the protective layer, when the particles approach each other it is difficult for them to come further together and agglomerate, thus achieving good dispersion stability.
  3. General dispersion process — wetting, comminution, stabilization (coating film)The documentation divides the pigment dispersion process into three parts: wetting, comminution (dispersion), and stabilization after comminution (coating film). Pigment surface treatment is the process of stabilizing pigments after comminution — depositing and coating monomolecular or multimolecular substances on the surface of pigment particles, including surfactants, modifiers, derivatives of the pigment itself, etc. The documentation additionally records: because there is a coating film on the powder surface, both the oil absorption value and the friction coefficient are greatly reduced; generally, the finer the powder fineness, the higher the surface gloss and saturation will be.
  4. Temperature behavior — wetting and coating on heating, setting on coolingThe documentation records that "at temperatures above 80 degrees, R1800-S can quickly wet into the powder to achieve dispersion and coating effects, and after cooling the coating agent will solidify". This also explains the two usage prerequisites of this product: it must be used with heating, and it is "prohibited from use in cold-processed powder" (without heating, this product cannot be used, because it cannot fully exert the dispersion and coating effect).

05Applications

The official application list is color masterbatch, apparel coatings, powder coatings, oil-based coatings, and oil-based inks; the product handbook additionally records uses such as filler systems, PVC stabilizer systems, and calcined kaolin. Item by item as follows:

Color masterbatch
First on the official application list; the official positioning is "dedicated to color masterbatch, chemical dispersion breaks up agglomerates."
Apparel coatings / powder coatings / oil-based coatings / oil-based inks
Listed in the official application list; among them, powder coatings and oil-based coatings overlap with the list for the related R1800-SK grade, so small-scale tests are recommended for confirmation according to the coloring system.
Filler systems (calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin) and filled masterbatch
Comes with a dosage table graded by mesh (see Section 4); as the filler dosage increases, the powder tends to form gel spots.
PVC plastics stabilizer system
When producing PVC composite stabilizers (lead salt, lead-barium, barium-zinc composites, etc.), adding 0.5% of this product makes the composite stabilizer more compatible with PVC and more evenly dispersed in the PVC, and provides internal and external lubricating and mold-release action.
Calcined kaolin and insulation scenarios
When treating calcined kaolin, adding this product can improve the dispersion of the kaolin and can improve the insulation performance of the kaolin used in cable compounds.
Compatibility range
The R1800 series has very good compatibility with all rubbers and plastics (as recorded in the series description).
Grade selection and synergy
The source gives grade selection recommendations based on pigment fineness and oil absorption value; examples of recommended grades include R1800-SK, R1800-SH, R1618, R900A, etc.

Field issues & application examples (as recorded in the source material)

Table 4 · Application case highlights
Field issueWhat the source material states
Small granular pits appear in calcium carbonate and talc fillers for blow moldingThe source gives three types of causes (silica in the mineral source not ground fine enough, insufficient fineness, and powder too fine with a lack of a good dispersant); this product addresses the third type (insufficient dispersion and encapsulation).
Color points and map-like color patches (patterns) in coated color filmsRelated to poor dispersion of the color masterbatch, the heat resistance of the pigment, and the melt index difference between the carrier and the coating resin; the source recommends selecting a good dispersant, controlling the processing temperature, cleaning the screw and die head, and adjusting the temperature of each zone.
Heat-sealing performance of the film is affectedBlending paraffin wax into low-molecular-weight polyethylene wax (dosage 10%–40%) causes decomposition and sublimation during processing and migration to the film surface, resulting in blooming; using this product can reduce the amount of low-molecular-weight polyethylene wax used.
Filament breakage occurs in flat yarn productionThe source gives several types of causes: resin melt index too high, insufficient tensile strength, draw ratio too high, cooling water temperature too low causing excessively fast crystallization, raw material impurities, as well as poor dispersion of the color masterbatch, pigment particles too large, and poor compatibility between the carrier and the resin resulting in an unsmooth film surface; if it is on the color masterbatch dispersion side, the source recommends selecting a good dispersant when making the color masterbatch.
The surface of the color masterbatch is not shinyThe troubleshooting order is extrusion temperature → pigment dispersibility → dispersant quality and dosage → pigment lubricity treatment; the source recommends using this product to deal with this type of problem.

06How it differs from related grades

All three R1800 grades are paste-form hyperdispersants, divided by color line; the differences are not reflected in the standard physicochemical entries but in the application lists, dedicated experiments, and phase-transition behavior. Comparison as follows:

07Usage & storage

This product is a paste. Its performance is directly related to temperature, mixing order, and the basis for dosage. The following points are taken item by item from the recorded data.

Conditions of use

  • Must be used with heating: "At temperatures above 80 degrees, R1800-S can quickly wet into the powder to achieve dispersion and encapsulation effects; after cooling, the encapsulating agent will solidify."
  • Do not use in cold-processed powder—the product cannot be used without heating (the dispersion and encapsulation effects cannot be fully exerted).
  • Do not use in water-based coatings or water-based inks.
  • This product is inert and "does not react with other additives"; it can be combined with a lubrication system in the same formulation (the data records "only a good lubrication system can ensure that the dispersant fully exerts its effect" and "the internal and external lubrication in the formulation must be balanced with each other").

Identification methods (as recorded)

  • Physical properties: This product is a blue paste liquid; a small amount added to clean water dissolves rapidly in the water and produces white flakes and a small amount of foam (the white flakes are the encapsulating agent component).
  • Trademark: The trademark bears a two-dimensional identification code that can be scanned for authentication; the image in the upper right corner of the trademark is an anti-counterfeit mark.

Packaging and storage

  • Packaging: 25kg / PE plastic drum.
  • Storage conditions: cool, dry place; keep away from moisture.

Not recorded in the source (not composed on this page)

  • Compliance certification statements (such as RoHS, REACH, etc.), shelf life, and safe-handling data (MSDS level)—not recorded in the available data.

08FAQ

How should I choose among S / SK / SH?

Divide by coloring system: S corresponds to color and general-purpose, SK is used for white masterbatch (incorporating ester functional groups on the S base to improve anti-yellowing and weather resistance), and SH is used for black masterbatch and carbon black (incorporating silicon-based products on the S base to improve carbon black dispersion performance). The two items powder coatings and oil-based coatings overlap in the official lists of S and SK; the source does not give a rule for choosing between the two in overlapping scenarios, so it is recommended to run a small-scale trial based on the coloring system to confirm.

Why must it be used with heating?

The dispersion and encapsulation of this product depend on temperature: the data records that above 80℃ it can quickly wet into the powder to achieve dispersion and encapsulation effects, and after cooling the encapsulating agent solidifies and fixes the encapsulation in place. It is therefore forbidden to use it in cold-processed powder—without heating, the dispersion and encapsulation effects cannot be fully exerted.

Can it be used in water-based systems?

No. The source lists it under prohibited items: R1800-S must not be used in water-based coatings or water-based inks. This product is a dispersant for oil-based systems; the source also records an identification phenomenon in which the product "disperses rapidly on contact with water" (the clean water test), but that is a product identification behavior, not a formulation use restriction.

How is the dosage determined?

It is divided into three tiers by scenario and denominator: filler surface treatment is tiered by mesh (see the tier table in Section 4); pigments are adjusted in the formulation at about 0.3%–1.2%; the addition in the final plastic product is 0.5%—1%. The dosage principle is "determine the addition amount according to the different oil absorption values and particle sizes of the powders"—the finer the powder, the higher the oil absorption value, and the larger the specific surface area, the higher the added amount.

What is its relationship with additives such as wax and stearic acid?

A complementary relationship, not a substitution relationship. The R1800 series paste hyperdispersants follow a chemical dispersion route (anchoring group adsorption, encapsulation, steric barrier); powdery additives such as wax, stearic acid, and EBS belong to wetting dispersion (mainly wetting and internal/external lubrication). The data records "only a good lubrication system can ensure that the dispersant fully exerts its effect," and a traceable point is available: in the carbon black experiment reference formulation of the same series R1800-SH, the paste hyperdispersant and polyethylene wax appear in the same formulation.

Why does the dosage need to be increased for finer powders?

Source: "Generally, the finer the powder, the higher the oil absorption value and the larger the specific surface area, and the higher the amount of dispersant added." The tier table gives reference values tier by tier by 800 / 1250 / 1500 / 3000 mesh, so you can consult the table directly as a starting point.

After receiving the goods, how can I tell whether it is genuine?

The source gives two types of identification methods. Physical properties: This product is a blue paste liquid; a small amount added to clean water dissolves rapidly in the water and produces white flakes and a small amount of foam (the white flakes are the encapsulating agent component). Trademark: The trademark bears a two-dimensional identification code that can be scanned for authentication; the image in the upper right corner of the trademark is an anti-counterfeit mark.

What are the packaging and storage conditions? What should be noted during storage?

Packaging is 25kg / PE plastic drum; storage conditions are a cool, dry place, protected from moisture. The source does not record a shelf life, and this page does not draft one on its behalf—if storage conditions exceed the normal range or after long-term storage, it is recommended to run a small-scale trial before use.

  • Product handbook: the full R1800-S entry (overview / main components / physicochemical properties / application scope / use effects / advantages / dosage / main functions / identification methods / prohibited items / eight application examples / addition content / packaging / storage); the R1800-SK and R1800-SH comparison section; the series overview section (product introduction, synergistic effects, masterbatch background); the color masterbatch selection section.
  • Official product data: all fields of R1800-S (name, category, positioning, description, mechanism, applications, physicochemical parameters, main components, function description, recommended dosage); the R1800-SK / R1800-SH comparison entries; the series entry (representative grades, series description).

Not covered by the source material (not written on this page — to be added later)

  • Compliance certification statements (such as RoHS, REACH, etc.), shelf life, and safe-handling data (MSDS level): not recorded in the available data.
  • "Solubility" (organic solvent) entry: not listed for this grade.
  • Two statements of kaolin dosage are juxtaposed (0.2% in the advantages entry and 0.3%–0.8% in the tier table), and the reference objects are not annotated with a corresponding relationship.

BRAND HERITAGE

The world's first hyperdispersant manufacturer

Shanghai Shijin Industrial Co., Ltd. & Dongguan Californium Curium New Material Technology Co., Ltd. — the first company in the world to make hyperdispersants: the full hyperdispersant experimental programme was completed in 2009, and the R1800 series — the world's first hyperdispersant — was officially launched in 2010.

Roughly 1–3 years ahead of every peer worldwide — in hyperdispersants, not in ordinary dispersants.

What is meant here is a hyperdispersant — chemical dispersion, not an ordinary physical wetting dispersant — the two are different product categories.

The subject of "the first in the world" is the two companies together: Shanghai Shijin Industrial Co., Ltd. (上海世进实业有限公司) and 东莞锎锔新材料科技有限公司, which share one owner. This website is the 锎锔新材料科技 site, hence the emphasis on it.
