Halogen-free flame-retardant masterbatch for PA6 nylon spinningHALOGEN-FREE FR MASTERBATCH · 350-MESH · drip-type · UL94 V-0 criteria

A halogen-free flame-retardant masterbatch developed specifically for PA6 nylon fibre spinning — high-shear pelletised and passed through a 350-mesh filter so that agglomerates are retained and spinneret flow stays continuous. It is a drip-type flame retardant: the melt drips away and carries the combustion with it to promote self-extinguishing, and the drips do not ignite the absorbent cotton below, meeting the UL94 V-0 restriction on dripping.

SEC.01 / DROP-TYPE FLAME-RETARDANCY

Drip-type flame retardancy: drips carry the combustion away and the flame self-extinguishes · drips do not ignite absorbent cotton

The demonstration uses a spun nylon fibre tow. M918 is drip-type — the dripping melt carries heat and combustible material away and promotes self-extinguishing. The dividing line between V-0 and V-2 is exactly the drip: V-0 requires that the drips do not ignite the absorbent cotton below. Both states show the drip animation; the difference is whether the cotton catches fire.

Drip-type FR · the dripping melt carries the combustion away and promotes self-extinguishing · drips do not ignite absorbent cotton (UL94 V-0 criteria)
DROP-TYPE / mechanism of drip-type flame retardancy

The melt drips away · carries the combustion off · promotes self-extinguishing

M918 is a drip-type flame retardant: during combustion melt drips form and fall, carrying heat and combustible decomposition products away, so the flame loses the conditions to sustain itself and goes out. Dripping is the normal flame-retardant behaviour of this system, not a defect.

V-0 CRITERIA / drips do not ignite absorbent cotton

The dividing line between V-0 and V-2 is the drip

UL94 V-0 permits dripping but requires that the drips must not ignite the absorbent cotton below; at the same time afterflame must be ≤10s per specimen and ≤50s over 5 specimens, afterglow ≤30s, and the flame must not reach the holding clamp. M918 drips while the cotton does not burn, so it satisfies the V-0 restriction on dripping (ordinary or non-conforming materials ignite the cotton and only reach V-2 or lower). The measured grade of M918 is given in the COA supplied with each shipment.

SPINNABILITY / spinning performance retained

Compatible with the PA6 melt · does not degrade spinnability

The masterbatch is highly compatible with PA6 resin and disperses evenly; while providing flame retardancy it does not degrade the spinnability or mechanical properties of the fibre (see filament continuity in SEC.02).

SEC.02 / 350-MESH SPINNING

350-mesh high-shear pelletising: fibre grade, zero orifice blocking

A fully automatic process animation: melt extrusion → through the 350-mesh filter plate → spinneret extrusion → travel → winding. In the continuous state 6/6 orifices spin evenly; in the blocked state the filament stream is cut off in front of the plate, fuzz shivers and winding stalls.

Agglomerates retained by the 350-mesh filter · spinneret flow continuous · filaments even, without fuzz
Filtration / high-shear pelletising + 350-mesh filtration

Agglomerates retained · fibre grade, zero orifice blocking

High-shear dispersion pelletising through a 350-mesh filter gives fine pellets; this extremely high filtration mesh ensures dispersibility and consistency in fine processing — the entry requirement for high-precision processes such as spinning (ordinary pelletising reaches only 40–80 mesh and leaves agglomerates behind).

Throughput / spinneret pass rate · fibre evenness

6/6 orifices spinning continuously · no filament breaks or fuzz

Even dispersion = continuous and even output: the spinneret pass rate and fibre evenness improve markedly, avoiding clogged filaments, filament breaks and fuzz caused by poor dispersion, and safeguarding the continuity and quality of high-speed spinning.

Purpose-built / PA6 nylon fibre spinning

Developed specifically for PA6 spinning

M918 was developed specifically for PA6 nylon fibre spinning — 350-mesh filtration eliminates agglomerate blocking of the orifices, while drip-type halogen-free flame retardancy gives the fibre fire safety. The two are achieved together.

01Product positioning

M918 belongs to the functional masterbatch category (functional masterbatch series); its Chinese name is "PA6 Nylon Halogen-Free Flame Retardant Masterbatch M918" (handbook title) / "PA6 Nylon Spinning Halogen-Free Flame Retardant Masterbatch M918" (official name). The handbook table-of-contents line, verbatim: "M918: PA6 halogen-free flame retardant masterbatch (spinning) — PA spinning halogen-free flame retardant, PA film halogen-free flame retardant (phosphate type)". The official tagline line: "Dripping-type flame retardancy · drips do not ignite absorbent cotton · 350 mesh filter screen". (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

Composition and process, verbatim: "M918 nylon halogen-free flame retardant masterbatch is compounded from phosphate flame retardant, hyperdispersant, PA6 resin, etc., passed through high-speed shearing and a 350 mesh filter screen, and pelletized." Function statement: "M918 is a fully organic flame retardant, and the flame retardant mechanism is the dripping type. It can effectively retard flame and achieve good compatibility performance." (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

Page positioning statement, verbatim: "A halogen-free flame retardant masterbatch developed specifically for PA6 nylon fiber spinning — high-shear granulated and passed through a 350 mesh filter screen, retaining agglomerates and ensuring continuous spinning; it is a dripping-type flame retardancy, the falling melt drips carry away the combustion and promote self-extinguishing, and the drips do not ignite the absorbent cotton below, meeting the UL94 V-0 restriction on dripping." (Data source: official product data)

Halogen statement: the product name itself is "halogen-free flame retardant masterbatch"; the English name contains Halogen-free; the page notes "free of chlorine and bromine · low smoke · no hydrogen halide" and "dripping type · halogen-free · low smoke". This product is a halogen-free grade, and the page's compliance wording is written in the halogen-free direction. Note: the correspondence between this grade and any additive grade is not given in the materials (the official "MXXX internally uses RXXX" phrasing is explicitly stated for other grades, while this grade has no such field); this page does not infer or supply any such relationship. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

  • Dripping-type flame retardancy — "During combustion, melt drips form and fall, carrying away heat and combustible decomposition products, so that the flame loses the conditions to sustain itself and self-extinguishes. Dripping is the normal flame retardant behavior of this system, not a defect."
  • V-0 dripping criterion — "UL94 V-0 permits dripping, but requires that the drips must not ignite the absorbent cotton below; at the same time, afterflame ≤10s per single occurrence, ≤50s in total for 5 specimens, afterglow ≤30s, and the flame must not spread to the clamping end." The actual rating is given in the COA accompanying the shipment.
  • 350 mesh filter screen process — high-shear dispersion granulation and passage through a 350 mesh filter screen ensure spinning continuity; the page notes "conventional granulation is only 40–80 mesh and leaves residual agglomerates", and gives the demonstrative comparison statement of "6/6 orifices extruding filament uniformly in the continuous state".
  • Spinning suitability — good compatibility with PA6 resin and uniform dispersion, "while ensuring flame retardancy it does not degrade the spinnability and mechanical properties of the fiber" (qualitative statement; quantitative data not given).
  • Application list (four official items) — PA6 industrial filament / webbing · safety belt yarn / ropes · fishing nets / luggage fabric · engineering spinning.
  • Numerical statements (two sets coexist) — the handbook specification table and the official fields give values such as 8%-12% / <325℃ / UL94V0 / 1.22g/cm³ / 1.9DI/g; the page, however, takes the conservative position of "see the COA accompanying the shipment / the original TDS" for numerical indicators. The two are presented side by side.

02Formulation system & mechanism of action

System and process: compounded from phosphate flame retardant, hyperdispersant, PA6 resin, etc., and pelletized after high-speed shearing and filtration through a 350 mesh filter screen. The filtration mesh rating is directly related to spinning: the higher the filtration precision, the fewer the residual agglomerates and the more continuous the spinning — this is an entry condition for high-precision processes such as spinning. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

The flame retardant mechanism is the dripping type (fully organic system): during combustion, melt drips form and fall, carrying away heat and combustible decomposition products, so that the flame loses the conditions to sustain itself and self-extinguishes. The page states explicitly that "dripping is the normal flame retardant behavior of this system, not a defect"; it also gives the general dripping criterion for V-0 — the drips must not ignite the absorbent cotton below, and requires afterflame ≤10s per single occurrence, ≤50s in total for 5 specimens, afterglow ≤30s, and the flame must not spread to the clamping end. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

Compatibility: the masterbatch has good compatibility with PA6 resin and disperses uniformly; the page's statement on the retention of spinnability and mechanical properties is qualitative — "does not degrade the spinnability and mechanical properties of the fiber". The materials do not give a detailed elaboration of the combustion mechanism, do not give the limiting oxygen index (LOI), and do not disclose the specific chemical name and proportion of the phosphate flame retardant — this page neither drafts them on the product's behalf nor applies the disclosed values of other grades. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

  1. Compounding and filtration — high shear + 350 mesh filter screenPhosphate flame retardant, hyperdispersant, PA6 resin, etc. are compounded, dispersed under high shear, and then pelletized through a 350 mesh filter screen; agglomerates are retained, preventing spinneret orifice blockage.
  2. Dry blending and spinning — dry blending with PA6 chipsPage usage statement: dry-blend uniformly with PA6 chips → spinning extrusion; equipped with a 350 mesh filter screen to prevent agglomerates from blocking the orifices.
  3. Flame retardancy achieved — dripping-type self-extinguishingCombustion forms melt drips that fall, carrying away heat and combustible decomposition products, so the flame loses the conditions to sustain itself and self-extinguishes; the drips do not ignite the absorbent cotton below, meeting the V-0 restriction on dripping.
  4. Boundary — rating subject to the COA accompanying the shipmentPage statement: the measured flame retardant rating is given in the COA accompanying the shipment; the handbook specification table states "flame retardant effect UL94V0" — the two are presented side by side.

03Key parameters

The parameters recorded in the handbook specification table and in the official fields are as follows (the column headers are product code / addition ratio / processing temperature / flame-retardant effect / specific gravity / viscosity). The page separately carries the conservative wording "for numerical values, refer to the COA supplied with the goods"; the two are presented side by side. The values in the table are those recorded in the source materials; confirming with a small-scale trial before batch use is recommended.

04Recommended dosage window

The addition ratio follows the masterbatch series' "internal addition ratio" basis: calculated on the total mass of the resin system (example in the general rules: raw material 95% + masterbatch 5% = 100%). The range for this grade is 8%-12%.

Table 2 · M918 — recommended dosage
ScenarioDosageConditions & notes
Internal addition ratio (on the total mass of the resin system)8% - 12%The handbook specification table and the official fields give the same value; the page separately records "recommended addition: determined by a small-scale trial according to the flame-retardant rating (see COA)" — the range value and "determined by small-scale trial" are both stated
Ratio-setting method (general rules)select the best by small-scale trialWhen samples are sufficient, try several formulations and select the best; when there is only enough sample for one trial, use the highest recommended addition ratio (i.e. 12%); for the first trial, add no other auxiliary materials or additives, and add them gradually after it succeeds; take several sample sections for testing
Thickness–dosage directionNot given in the source materialsThe handbook page / page / data layer / catalog line were all checked and no thickness statement is found anywhere — it can be said to be neither "increase" nor "decrease"; the direction clauses of other grades must not be cross-applied

Addition method: dry-blend uniformly with PA6 chips, then spin and extrude; fit a 350 mesh filter screen to eliminate agglomerates plugging the holes. Processing temperature: the source gives the upper limit "<325℃"; the page's wording is "refer to the conventional PA6 spinning temperature (see COA)" — the two are stated side by side, and the specific window value is not given in the source. Hard requirement in the general rules: "the processing temperature must not be higher than the maximum temperature recommended in the product brochure, otherwise it will damage the masterbatch's performance!"

Field issues & application examples (as recorded in the source material)

Table 4 · Application case highlights
Field issueWhat the source material states
Could dripping actually be a defect? The page states clearly: "dripping is the normal flame-retardant behavior of this system, and is not a defect." M918 is a dripping-type flame retardant: the falling drips carry away heat and combustible decomposition products, depriving the flame of the conditions to sustain itself so that it self-extinguishes.
How is dripping judged to meet the standard?According to the general UL94 V-0 criteria: the drips must not ignite the absorbent cotton below; single afterflame ≤10s, total afterflame for 5 specimens ≤50s, afterglow ≤30s, and the flame must not spread to the holding clamp. The measured rating of M918 is given in the COA supplied with the goods.
Why does spinning plug holes and break filaments? It is related to agglomerates caused by poor dispersion. The process for M918 is high-shear pelletizing and passing through a 350 mesh filter screen (the page records that ordinary pelletizing is only 40–80 mesh, with residual agglomerates), so as to intercept agglomerates and ensure spinning continuity; the page gives the demonstration comparison wording "6/6 holes with uniform filament output in the continuous state".
Which flame retardant does M918 use?The corresponding relationship is not given in the source materials: this grade has no "internally uses RXXX" field, and the formulation facts go only as far as "phosphate flame retardant + hyperdispersant + PA6 resin"; this page neither infers nor supplements. When formulation-level information is needed, please request it from the product side.

06How it differs from related grades

On the functional masterbatch side, the four halogen-free flame retardant grades are divided by substrate (PE / PETG / PA6 / PP); this table gives the coordinates of this grade, and the comparison columns are the original text of the respective documents—values are not interchangeable.

07Usage & storage

The following points come item by item from the recorded materials; the masterbatch general usage rules and the product requirements are listed side by side.

Feeding and process

  • Dry blending: dry-blend evenly with PA6 chips → spinning extrusion; a 350 mesh filter is fitted to prevent agglomerates from blocking the pores.
  • Processing temperature: not higher than the maximum temperature recommended in the materials (upper limit for this grade <325℃); the page wording is with reference to the conventional PA6 spinning temperature (see COA).
  • Drying: dry PA6 separately at 100 degrees for 5 hours; or, after stirring the raw material and masterbatch evenly, dry according to the original production process.

Trial discipline (masterbatch general rules)

  • For the first trial, do not add other auxiliary materials / additives at first; add them gradually after the trial succeeds.
  • When samples are sufficient, try several formulations and select the best; when there is only enough sample for one trial, use the highest recommended addition ratio (i.e., 12%).
  • When obtaining test results, take several sections of sample for testing.
  • Seal and store the remaining unused masterbatch to prevent moisture from affecting the next use.

  • For numeric items such as the measured flame retardant rating and processing temperature, the page wording is "see the accompanying COA / original TDS".

Not recorded in the materials (not drafted on this page)

  • Specific values for packaging specification, shelf life and storage conditions—not listed on this grade's page (the page lists them under "see COA" items).
  • The specific chemical name and ratio of the phosphate flame retardant, the PA6 carrier resin grade, and the oxygen index (LOI)—not recorded in the materials.
  • RoHS / REACH compliance statements and report numbers, halogen-free determination threshold and test reports—not listed in this grade's materials.

08FAQ

What is the flame retardant mechanism of M918?

Dripping type (fully organic system): during combustion, molten drips form and fall, carrying away heat and combustible decomposition products, so that the flame loses the conditions to continue and self-extinguishes; dripping is the normal flame retardant behavior of this system. The molten drips do not ignite the absorbent cotton below, meeting the UL94 V-0 restriction on dripping.

Why is the 350 mesh filter emphasized?

The filter mesh count bears on spinning continuity: high-shear pelletizing and passing through a 350 mesh filter can retain agglomerates and ensure continuous spinning (the page records that ordinary pelletizing is only 40–80 mesh, with residual agglomerates). This is an admission condition for high-precision processes such as spinning.

What is the addition ratio?

According to the masterbatch "internal addition ratio" wording (the denominator is the total mass of the resin system): 8%-12% (the handbook and official fields give the same value); the page additionally records "determined by small-scale trials according to the flame retardant rating (see COA)". Both are present. The thickness direction is not given in the materials.

What is the upper limit of the processing temperature?

The materials give an upper limit of "<325℃", and the general rules require that "the processing temperature must not be higher than the maximum temperature recommended in the product brochure, otherwise it will damage the masterbatch performance!"; the page wording is with reference to the conventional PA6 spinning temperature (see COA).

Must the material be dried before use on the machine?

Yes. The masterbatch general rules give a separate drying wording: PA6 at 100 degrees for 5 hours; or, after stirring the raw material and masterbatch evenly, dry according to the original production process. Both are present.

What are the packaging and shelf life?

Not recorded in the materials—this grade's page does not list the packaging specification or shelf life (the page puts packaging under "see the accompanying COA" items), and this page does not draft them.
