Dual mechanism of steric hindrance + electrostatic repulsion · 0.5%–5% dosage
E099 is a hyperdispersant made specifically for fluoroplastics. The manual is direct about its positioning: improving the dispersion performance of fluoropolymers (PTFE, PVDF, FEP etc.) in solvents or in the base matrix.
This article breaks down the technical file of this additive point by point: what problem it solves, which mechanisms it relies on, what the specifications are, where it is suitable, and in which temperature window it is worth thinking of it at all.
What it targets
E099 is a new hyperdispersant developed and produced by our company specifically for colouring heat-resistant plastics and special plastics.
Its target material is stated without ambiguity: fluoropolymers — PTFE, PVDF, FEP etc. The manual gives an overall judgement on the common difficulty of this class of materials: fluoroplastic particles (such as PTFE micropowder) tend to agglomerate in solvents or resins; once they agglomerate, dispersion is out of the question, and processability and the performance of the final product are affected along with them.
The approach E099 takes is reducing interfacial tension and preventing particle agglomeration, and in doing so it markedly improves the processability of fluoroplastics and the performance of the finished product.
Three actions: how the manual states them
The manual divides the core actions of E099 into three, and this is the source of every technical claim that follows.
One: dispersion stability
Dispersion stability is achieved through steric hindrance or electrostatic repulsion, preventing fluoroplastic particles (such as PTFE micropowder) from agglomerating in solvents or resins.
This is the foundation the whole product stands on. The two mechanisms are parallel — the manual says "or", not "and".
Steric hindrance is the physical-barrier route: the dispersant forms a layer of extended molecules on the particle surface, and two particles push against each other as they approach.
Electrostatic repulsion is the electrical route: a double layer forms around the charged particles, and charges of the same sign repel each other.
Two: improved compatibility
Improved compatibility: improves the compatibility of fluoroplastics with non-polar/polar systems, especially critical in coatings, inks and composites.
The manual singles out the point that both non-polar and polar systems have to be covered, and lists coatings, inks and composites as the key applications.
In composites, compatibility is pulled out and treated on its own:
Composites: enhances the interfacial bonding strength between fluoroplastics and metals, ceramics etc.
In other words, E099 is not only used as a dispersant inside plastics — at the same time it is an interfacial additive between the fluoropolymer and the inorganic phase.
Three: processing optimisation
Processing optimisation: reduces the melt viscosity and improves the flow of extrusion, injection moulding and other processes.
The manual explicitly lists the improved processes as extrusion and injection moulding, and the benefit falls on flow.
Technical advantages: three labels
The 【Technical advantages】 section of the manual gives three.
High temperature resistance: adapted to the high-temperature processing environment of fluoroplastics (200–400°C).
This is the most direct dividing line between E099 and ordinary additives. The applicable range given in the manual is 200–400°C — which is exactly where the real processing temperature of fluoroplastics falls.
Chemical inertness: matched to fluoroplastics, does not affect their corrosion resistance, insulation and other intrinsic properties.
This is the bottom-line constraint in material selection. The value of fluoroplastics themselves lies in corrosion resistance and insulation; if the additive weakened these two properties instead, however good the dispersion, it would mean nothing. What the manual states explicitly is does not affect.
Low dosage: usually only 0.5%-5% is needed to significantly improve the dispersion effect.
"Significantly improve" is the manual's own wording. The span from 0.5% to 5% leaves it to the actual system to set according to the grade and the target degree of dispersion.
Specification
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Main component | polyolefin ether |
| Density | 0.91 g/ml |
| PH value | 6.1–6.7 |
| Colour | white with a yellowish hue |
| Solubility | insoluble in water, soluble in alcohols and lipids |
| Heat resistance | 200–400 ℃ |
| Dosage | usually 0.5%–5% |
| Packaging | 20 kg PE plastic drums |
| Storage conditions | cool, dry place, protected from moisture |
One row deserves separate attention: solubility — insoluble in water, soluble in alcohols and lipids. It delimits the medium of use directly: alcohol and lipid systems are naturally suited, while purely aqueous systems are outside the range of this grade.
A PH value of 6.1–6.7 is a narrow range. Considering that electrostatic repulsion is part of its action mechanism, the charge state is a quantity that has to be controlled, not a by-product that can be swept along.
Application fields: as listed in the manual
The 【Application fields】 section of the manual lists three groups.
Base resins: silicone resins, fluoroplastics, PA plastics, POM plastics, PC plastics, PET plastics etc.
Composites: enhances the interfacial bonding strength between fluoroplastics and metals, ceramics etc.
Electronic materials: used for fluoroplastic insulating layers and for the uniform dispersion of thermally conductive fillers.
The second and third groups should be read together with the compatibility advantage above — the metals and ceramics in composites and the thermally conductive fillers in electronic materials are all inorganic phases, and in these applications E099 does two jobs at once: dispersion and interfacial bonding.
Three decision points
First, look at where your processing temperature falls. The manual gives E099 a heat resistance range of 200–400°C. If your process falls inside this window, its high temperature resistance is the advantage; below this window, only the two claims of dispersion and compatibility remain available.
Second, look at whether the main resin is fluorinated. The application fields list silicone resin, PA, POM, PC and PET plastics as well — these are the application scope given by the manual, but the technical advantages of E099 are written around fluoroplastics. Fluoroplastics are where it belongs.
Third, look at which of the three you need. Dispersion stability, improved compatibility and processing optimisation are stated in parallel in the manual. But the order cannot be reversed: dispersion is the precondition — while the particles are still agglomerated in the solvent or resin, the other two cannot even be raised.
FAQ
Q: PTFE micropowder agglomerates — does E099 help? A: It does. The manual lists fluoropolymers such as PTFE, PVDF and FEP directly as target materials, and the function is precisely to prevent PTFE micropowder from agglomerating in solvents or resins.
Q: Can it be used in a purely aqueous system? A: Not suitable. The specification reads "insoluble in water, soluble in alcohols and lipids" — alcohol and lipid systems are the right match, while purely aqueous systems are outside the range of this grade.
Q: Will it weaken the corrosion resistance and insulation of the fluoroplastic itself? A: The manual's wording is "Chemical inertness: matched to fluoroplastics, does not affect their corrosion resistance, insulation and other intrinsic properties." This is also the bottom-line constraint in material selection.
Q: How much should be added? A: The manual states that usually only 0.5%–5% is needed to significantly improve the dispersion effect. The span of the range is left to the actual system, to be set according to the grade and the target degree of dispersion.
Q: What if the processing temperature is not between 200–400℃? A: The manual only gives the 200–400°C heat resistance window; there is no data on performance outside this window. Inside the window, the high temperature resistance advantage is what holds.
Key figures
The key figures for E099 are gathered here: a heat resistance range of 200–400℃, a dosage usually of 0.5%–5%, a density of 0.91 g/ml, a PH value of 6.1–6.7, packaging in 20 kg PE plastic drums, and storage in a cool, dry place protected from moisture.
In one sentence
E099 is a hyperdispersant made for fluoroplastics: polyolefin ether as the main constituent, 0.91 g/ml, PH 6.1–6.7, white with a yellowish hue, 200–400°C as its heat resistance window, 0.5%–5% as its dosage range. It holds the particles in place through steric hindrance or electrostatic repulsion, catches the inorganic phase through improved compatibility, and keeps extrusion and injection moulding running smoothly by reducing melt viscosity. Remember the 200–400°C window, and you will know when to think of it.
