Dedicated Softener for Melt-Blown MasterbatchOrganosilicone polymer · Fixes brittleness & hardening · Raises melt index

An organosilicone softener developed specifically for brittle, hardened melt-blown resin — with optimal adsorption, compatibility and easy emulsifiability, it emulsifies into a stable, transparent microemulsion; adsorbing onto the fibre surface as a lubricating film, it makes melt-blown fabric soft, toughened and hard to break, while greatly raising the melt index and smoothing filament extrusion.

SEC.01 / FLEXIBILITY

Flexibility compared: brittle and snapping vs. flexible and springing back

Both states are bent with the same force in a looping animation. Without the softener the fibres are dry and hard — a slight bend snaps them and debris falls away; with R1608S the organosilicone adsorbs into a lubricating film, so the fibres spring back and resist breaking. The watershed is not whether it drips, but whether it breaks.

Organosilicone adsorbs onto the fibre surface as a lubricating film · lowers interfacial friction · soft, toughened, hard to break
TARGET / Fixes brittleness & hardening

Made for brittle, hardened melt-blown resin

R1608S was developed specifically for brittle, hardened melt-blown resin. It is a basic component of softening finishes for melt-blown fabric, nonwoven and other textiles, offering optimal adsorption, compatibility and easy emulsifiability.

TOUGHENING / Toughened, resists breaking

Tensile strength and elongation at break both rise

It raises the tensile strength and elongation at break of melt-blown fabric so that it is hard to break and does not turn brittle; it bends and springs back instead of snapping in a brittle way.

TOUCH / Better hand feel

Soft · smooth · comfortable to the touch

It makes melt-blown fabric softer and smoother, markedly improving tactile comfort — a good match for skin-contact uses such as face masks and medical protection.

SEC.02 / MFI & FLOW

Melt index and flow: twin-die extrusion under identical conditions

Left and right are a like-for-like comparison: same temperature, same weight load — the only variable is whether R1608S is added. Four dimensions are shown at once — flows thick/thin, travels fast/slow (the right strand breaks up), piles high/low, and outputs more/less (the twin bars below). Pile height and flow speed are qualitative illustrations, not measured values.

Same temperature · same weight load — the only variable: whether R1608S is added

With R1608SFlows thick · travels fast · piles high
More output → higher MFI ▲
WithoutFlows thin · travels slowly · breaks up
Less output → lower MFI ▼
With R1608S
More ▲
Without
Less ▼
Relative output over the same time (qualitative, not a measured MFI value)
MFI / Higher melt index

More output at the same load and temperature

The melt index MFI is defined as "the grams of melt extruded through a standard die in 10 minutes at a given temperature and weight load". With R1608S, more melt is extruded per unit of time (the left pile is higher and the twin bars below are longer), so MFI rises markedly.

FLOW / Better resin flow

Thick and continuous vs. thin and interrupted

The left strand is thick, continuous, with a bright core, and flows fast; the right strand is thin, slow and breaks up — a direct picture of "greatly improved resin flow": the organosilicone lubricates the melt internally, so the screw and die carry a lighter load and the output is smooth.

PROCESS / Smooth output · no clogging, no carbonisation

Less carbon build-up and die clogging, less local carbonisation

Better flow gives a continuous, smooth output that can reduce carbonisation and die clogging during processing, extending continuous production runs; and the high melt index plus random structure densifies the web, helping filtration efficiency (see the functions in SEC.03).

SEC.03 / FUNCTIONS & ADVANTAGES

Key functions · Product advantages

Five functions that hit melt-blown pain points; four advantages that come from the intrinsic nature of the organosilicone polymer.

  • Higher melt index (MFI):Greatly improves the flow and melt index of the plastic, optimising processability and the smoothness of filament extrusion.
  • Toughening:Raises the tensile strength and elongation at break of melt-blown fabric, so it neither breaks easily nor turns brittle.
  • Better hand feel:Makes melt-blown fabric softer and smoother, markedly improving tactile comfort.
  • Higher filtration efficiency:A high melt index and a random structure densify the melt-blown fabric, improving filtration performance.
  • Lower processing temperature:Some softeners also lower the processing temperature, reducing carbonisation and die clogging during processing.
Electrical insulation · flame retardant · weather resistant

Good electrical insulation, flame retardancy and weather resistance.

Inert · non-toxic · non-polluting

Ideally physiologically and chemically inert — non-toxic and does not pollute the ecosystem.

Low Tg · wide temperature range

Low glass transition temperature, good high- and low-temperature performance, low viscosity–temperature dependence.

Spreads into a film · hydrophobic lubrication

Ease of spreading into a film, defoaming, hydrophobicity and lubricity arising from reduced surface tension.

Data provenance: every value on this page (0.889 / 6.8–7.0 / 200–400 / 2–5% / 25kg) is taken from the supplied TDS with nothing invented; the viscosity unit written as "mPas" is noted as mPa·s. The twin-die comparison in SEC.02 is a qualitative like-for-like illustration (controlled variables = temperature and load); the pile height, flow speed and twin bars do not represent measured MFI values. The source file contains no disclaimer clause text, so no disclaimer has been fabricated. If the original TDS is supplied (with measured MFI, emulsification recipe, shelf life and so on), I will fill these in and extend the page.

01Product positioning

R1608S belongs to the 'softener' category (English category name 'Softener'), official one-liner 'nonwoven meltblown fabric softening', mechanism field 'internal-addition softening', main ingredient 'silicone polymer'—its function is defined as softening finishing for textiles such as meltblown fabric and nonwoven fabric, and its use route is plastic internal addition. Official overview sentence: 'R1608S softener is developed specifically for meltblown materials that become brittle and hard. It is a basic component for softening finishing agents for textiles such as meltblown fabric and nonwoven fabric. It has optimal adsorption, compatibility, and ease of emulsification. Using a mixer or homogenizer, R1608S softener is readily emulsified by suitable surfactants into a stable, transparent microemulsion. It can be used alone or combined with other organic softeners into special softening finishing agents, suitable for softening finishing of various textiles such as meltblown fabric and nonwoven fabric.' (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

Names and spellings: the handbook-level TDS page title is 'Meltblown masterbatch dedicated softener R1608S', the catalog line is 'R1608S: plastic internal-addition softener, nonwoven fabric, meltblown fabric, etc.'; the official full name is 'Plastic internal-addition softener R1608S', and the English name is 'Plastic Softener R1608S'. The product positioning direction can be summarized as: silicone polymer system · solving brittleness and hardness · improving melt index. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

Attribution and coordinates: at the handbook level it is listed in the comprehensive series section of the product catalog, on its own line (the R930 line is adjacent above and the R902 line is adjacent below); at the official level it is included in the comprehensive series; the application domain is registered as fiber and textile domain. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

What it is not: it is not a softening softener in the silk-like direction (that is R169, with category field 'softening softener'); it is not R1618 of the 'conductive hyperdispersant' category; it is not the matting (R930) / external lubrication (R902) directions adjacent in the same handbook; it is not the masterbatch / resin / filler itself; the documentation does not present it as a pairing, substitute, upgrade, or derivative relationship with any grade. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

Data boundaries: the documentation provides the overview sentence, main ingredient, four physicochemical properties, four product advantages, four main functions, application fields, addition dosage, packaging, and storage conditions; it does not list shelf life, transportation terms, methods of use (feeding order / mixing method / addition point), processing temperature window, precautions / safety notes / disclaimer, or test methods. All values on this page are values recorded in the documentation, not performance claims. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

  • Core product advantages (four items at the handbook level, verbatim): good electrical insulation, flame retardancy, and weather resistance.
  • Ideal physiological and chemical inertness, non-toxic, and does not pollute the ecological environment.
  • Low glass transition temperature, good high- and low-temperature resistance, and low viscosity-temperature rheological variation.
  • Easy spreading and film formation, defoaming, hydrophobicity, and lubricity caused by reduced surface tension—all four are directional enumerations of the intrinsic properties of silicone, without quantitative values attached.
  • Main functions (four items at the handbook level): toughening (increases the tensile strength and elongation at break of meltblown fabric, making it less likely to break and not brittle); improving hand feel (softer, smoother); improving filtration efficiency (high melt index and random structure make the meltblown fabric structure denser); reducing processing temperature (reduces carbonization and die-head clogging).
  • The detail-page function list additionally has one item, 'improving melt flow index (MFI): greatly improves the fluidity and melt index of plastics, optimizing processing performance and spinning smoothness'—this is a detail-page-level statement; specific MFI values are not provided in the documentation, and this page does not make quantitative statements.

02Formulation system & mechanism of action

The core component of this product is 'silicone polymer' (the handbook-level and official main ingredient fields share the same source and value)—a textile softening finishing auxiliary with silicone as its core. Its four product advantages (electrical insulation / physiological and chemical inertness / low glass transition temperature and high- and low-temperature resistance / spreading, film formation, and lubrication brought by low surface tension) are all directional enumerations of the intrinsic properties of silicone. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

Usage clues (verbatim from the overview sentence): 'Using a mixer or homogenizer, R1608S softener is readily emulsified by suitable surfactants into a stable, transparent microemulsion.' 'It can be used alone or combined with other organic softeners into special softening finishing agents.' The product's operating route is plastic internal addition—fully mixed with resin / meltblown material. (Data source: product handbook)

Performance boundaries: the four functions and four advantages are all qualitative statements—no increase values for tensile strength and elongation at break, no quantified filtration efficiency, no temperature reduction range, and no measured MFI values. This page does not extrapolate or make promises. (Data source: product handbook / official product data)

  1. Internal addition incorporation — fully mixed with meltblown materialThe route is plastic internal addition; the overview sentence gives a process clue, 'using a mixer or homogenizer', and it can be emulsified into a stable, transparent microemulsion before use.
  2. Toughening and brittleness resistance — increasing tensile strength and elongation at break'Toughening effect: increases the tensile strength and elongation at break of meltblown fabric, making it less likely to break and not brittle'—a development direction aimed at meltblown materials that become brittle and hard.
  3. Improved hand feel and surface — soft, smooth'Improved hand feel: makes meltblown fabric softer and smoother, enhancing tactile comfort'; the low surface tension of silicone provides easy spreading, film formation, and lubricity.
  4. Structure densification — high melt index and random structure'Improving filtration efficiency: through high melt index and random structure, the meltblown fabric structure is made denser, thereby improving filtration performance'; the detail-page level separately records 'improving melt flow index (MFI)', but specific values are not provided in the documentation.
  5. Reducing processing temperature (directional) — reducing carbonization and die-head clogging'Reducing processing temperature: some softeners have a cooling effect, which can reduce carbonization and die-head clogging'—a directional statement at the handbook level; the temperature reduction range is not provided.

04Recommended dosage window

The dosage is recorded as the same value (2%-5%) across three layers; the only difference is in notation. The denominator basis is not stated in the source materials — this page transcribes the range as recorded, explicitly notes it, and does not invent a denominator. The layer-by-layer verification is as follows in the table.

06How it differs from related grades

The most likely to be associated by number are R1618 (shares the '16 / 8' digit positions) and R169 (same category, both in the softening direction); next are R18 / R1800-S / R880 (similar digits and trailing S); also on the list are the same-booklet adjacent R930 (upper neighbor) and R902 (lower neighbor). At the documentation level, each grade is independent and is not written as a parent-child code or substitution relationship — values are not copied from one another. The comparison is as follows:

Reading notes: 1. The comparison only explains the respective documentation positioning and applicable targets of each grade; the dosage denominators differ by grade, and values cannot be interchangeably applied; 2. Judgment is based only on the four items: official full name, category field, mechanism field, and target system; do not guess from the number, and do not analogize by appearance; 3. Do not transfer R169's silk-like application and 0.5%-2% dosage to this grade, and do not write the values of R1618 / R18 / R880 into this grade. 08FAQ

What exactly is R1608S?

A softener dedicated to meltblown masterbatch: category field 'Softener', official one-liner 'nonwoven meltblown fabric softening', mechanism field 'internal-addition softening', main component 'silicone polymer'; appearance transparent liquid, PH 6.8-7.0, density 0.889g/cm³, viscosity 200-400mPas; used in PP meltblown fabric and nonwoven fabric production.

What is the dosage? What is the denominator?

Same value across three layers: 2%-5% — the handbook layer and official data layer have the verbatim 'Recommended addition amount 2%-5%', while the detail page layer has '2% – 5%'; the denominator basis is not specified in the documentation; this page records the range as-is and does not draft a denominator. For actual addition amount, please request the accompanying technical documents for the specific product code and conduct a small-scale trial.

Is it the same as R169 / R1618?

No. R169 is an internal-addition silicone softening agent for silk-like fibers (target material = plastic silk-like fiber, dosage recorded as '0.5%-2% of total raw material mass'); R1618 is a conductive carbon black hyperdispersant for plastics (category 'conductive hyperdispersant'); R1608S is a softener used for softening finishing of meltblown fabric / nonwoven fabric. The three differ entirely in category, target, and composition.

It has a similar number to R18 / R1800 series / R880; is it the same?

No. R18 = toughening and low-temperature resistance agent for PET/PETG; R1800-S / R1800-SK / R1800-SH = rubber and plastic hyperdispersants (three types divided by color system -S / -SK / -SH); R880 = compatibilizer for plastic graft modification. This grade has a single number (the trailing S is part of the number; there is no bare code and no subdivided code); the categories and values of the four directions are not interchangeably applied.

How is halogen indicated? Is there a directional clause such as 'thinner means more addition'?

This grade is not on the list of nine true halogen-free grades — halogen-related labeling is treated as 'not applicable'; if halogen compliance documents are needed, please request them from the supplier for the specific product code. Directional clause: this grade has no thickness-dosage directional clause such as 'thinner means more addition / thinner means less addition'; this page does not write one and does not apply the directional conclusions of other grades.

What are the packaging, storage, and missing-item clauses?

Packaging '25kg/PE plastic drum'; storage 'cool and dry place, moisture-proof'; clauses such as shelf life, transport, usage method, processing temperature window, safety notes, and disclaimer are not provided on this grade's page and are not drafted — please request the accompanying technical documents from the supplier for the specific product code.
